CAUTION:
If somothing is. between an occupant and an
air bag^ the bag H'llghE not inflale properly or it
might force the object into that person causing
severe injury or even dealh. The path of an
Inflating air bag must be kept clear. Don^t put
anything between an occupant and an air bag^
and don't attach or pul anything on the
steering wheel hub or on or near any other air
bag covering.
When Should an Air Bag Inflate?
An air bag is designecf to InPate in a mode rate to severe
ffonlal, or near-irontaI crash. The air bag will inflate
only if I he iiTipad speed Is above the system's designed
threshold level.”
If the GVWR (Gross Vehicie Weight Rating) of your
vehicle is 9600 or above, your vehicle has stngfe stage
air bags. If lha GVWR is befow &600 fhen your
vehicle has dual stage air bags. You can tind (he GYWR
on the cartilication label on ihe rear edge of the
driver's door See Laedtng Your Vehicle on page 4-30
ior more inlornnation.
Single Stage Air Bags
If your vehicle has irorlal air bags wjlh single slago
deploymenl and your vehicle goes straight into a wall
lhat doesn't rinove or defonn, the threshold level is about
12 tc 15mph (1Э to 26 knVh). The threshold level can
vary, however, with specific vehida design, so [hat it can
be somgwhat above or below Ihis range. If your
vehicle sirikes something tha1 wHi move or deform, such
as a parked car, (he threshold tevd will be higher.
The air bag is not designed to inflate in roflovem, rear
impacts, or in many side impacts because Intiation
would no1 help the occupant
In any particular crash, no one can say whether an air
bag should have Intlaled simply because of the damage
to a vehicle or because of what lha repair costs were.
Intiation is determined by the angle of thg impacl
and how quickly ihe vehicle stows down in frontal or
neaf-trortal impacts.
