Duat Stage Air Bags
If your vehicle hes trenlal gir bags w^th dual stage
deployment, the amount of restraint will adjust according
to tha Crash severity, For moderate frontal Impacts,
these air bags Inflate al a level less Ihgn Kill dopfayment.
For mors severe fr-onlal Impacls. full deployment
occurs. It the iront of your vehicle goes straight into g
/rail that doesn't move or deform, Ihe threshold level for
I he reduced depioyrrreni is about ^2\c^ 1Ö mph
{1910 26 hm/h), and the throshold level for a lull
deployment is about 1Ö to 25 mph (26 to 40 The
threshold level can vary, however, with specific
vehicle design, so that il can be somewhat above or
below this range,
if your vehicle strikes somethir>g tfial will move or
defcutn, such as a parked car. iho threshold level will be
higher* The driver’s and right front passenger’s frontal
air bags are not desigr^ed to inflate in rolJoverSf rear
impacts^ or many side Impacis because inflation would
not help the occupant.
Seat Position Sensors
Vehicles with dual stage air bags are also equipped wuh
special sensors which enable ihs' 'sensing system lo
monitor tha position of both the driver and passenger
front seals The seat posilion sensors provide
infonnation which la used to determine if Ihe air bags
should deploy al a neduced level or at full depoyment.
Atr Bag Systems
In any particular crash, no one can say whether an air
bag should have inflated simply because of the damage
to a vehicle or because of whal ihe repair costs were,
Inifl'ation is determined by the angle of the impacl
and how quickly the vehicle slows down in inont or
near-frontal impacts.
What Makes an Air Bag Inflate?
In am impact of sufficient severity, the air bag sensing
system detects that Ihe vehicle is in a crash. The
sertsing system triggers a release at gas from the
irflator, which inflates Uie air bag. The inflaior, air bag,
and related hardware are all part ol the air bag
modules mside the steering wheel and in Ihe instrument
panel in front of the nght Iront passenger.
